KU Athletes Won both Gold and Silver at the SELL Games

Klaipėda University athletes returned from the 38th SELL Games. This year's achievements include 5 medals: 2 gold and 3 silver.

Gold for footballers and the high jumper

Klaipėda University men's football team, led by Evaldas Misiūnas, was the only student team to represent Lithuania. Playing in a round-robin system, the footballers played against five teams, winning 4 matches and drawing one. The team that did not suffer a single defeat won the gold medal!

The second gold medal for KU was won by athlete Gintarė Tirevičiūtė. The high jumper cleared the bar at 184 cm and recorded the best Lithuanian result of the season! Another KU representative Satera Balčaitytė in the same event cleared the bar at 165 cm and won the 4th place.

Silver for basketball players

The KU basketball team went with a very modest line-up of only six players. On the first day, the basketball team had to play as many as 3 games! In the first-group match, our basketball players met the winners of last year's Games – Riga Technical University – and, demonstrating their fighting spirit and sportsmanship, managed to win by double digits (40:30), while in the other matches on the first day, they won by an even bigger point margin. This guaranteed a trip to the semi-finals.

On the second day of the Games, KU basketball team was renamed the "Magic Six" by coach Mindaugas Stašys. The team with the most modest line-up met a large Lithuanian Sports University team in the semi-finals and, after a tough fight, won a trip to the finals (49:35). In the finals, the team from Klaipėda met their old rivals, Vytautas Magnus University. Both teams recently fought in the finals of the Lithuanian Student Basketball League. Unfortunately, in Estonia, just like in Lithuania, the Magical Six had to concede to the superiority of their principal rivals. KU basketball players suffered their only defeat and had to settle for silver medals.

Success for debutants

Two silver medals were won by a debutant at the SELL Games, badminton player Jonas Petkus, a first-year student. On the first day of the Games, he was unbeatable in both singles and doubles competitions. In the final battles, as tough as they were, the athlete had to concede to the

superiority of his opponents, however ... Jonas was the only member of the KU team to have won two medals at the Games!

The other two debutants competed in table tennis and chess. Dovilė Račkauskaitė won two matches on the first day, but lost on the second day and finished 5th. In chess, Marija Šibaeva came 14th overall.

The third university team at the Games was the girls' volleyball team. The girls, who fought hard for two days against teams from Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian universities, came 5th.
